DRINK MORE WATER

Water is the single most critical nutrient in your body, and the most vital one we consume. The human brain is composed of 95% water, blood is 82% water and the lungs are nearly 90% water. Staying hydrated during training and games can make an enormous difference on how you perform. Ignoring hydration needs is one of the most common errors athletes make in their training regimens. Water is important for many functions in your body, including cushioning your joints and muscles, regulating your body temperature, bringing all the nutrients to your cells, and removing waste products from your body.

What happens to your body when you are dehydrated?

  • Athletic performance can be compromised by only slight changes in hydration status. Possible side effects from dehydration are muscle cramping, nausea, dizziness, weakness, increased exhaustion, and higher heart rate.

  • Research shows that fluid losses equal to 1-3 percent of body weight can decrease speed, power as well as technical abilities and decision-making. Like foods eaten, hydration has a significant influence on athletic performance.
